Joseph(Josques) Gregoir (1817-1876)
Joseph Gregoir, a prominent figure in Belgian Romanticism, studied piano with Herz and Rummel, was active as a renowned pianist and conductor, and composed over 100 works, primarily piano pieces. His younger brother, Édouard, who was five years his junior, was also renowned as a musician and writer. Reflecting Belgium's geographical position, composers from this country generally exhibit characteristics that are a blend or intermediate between German and French styles. Compared to the Netherlands, this results in a more serious impression, with higher transparency in tonal perception and lower luminosity. Building upon these national characteristics, J. Gregoir's music portrays a nostalgic worldview with a unique sense of presence, rendered through fluent and meticulous composition. Particularly noteworthy is the significant development in his works from his later years (Op. 90 onwards). (2019.5.21)
