A pianist and educator from Vladimir. He entered the Moscow Conservatory in 1866, studying piano under Nikolai Rubinstein and composition under Pyotr Tchaikovsky. After graduation, he became active as a pianist. In 1875, he premiered Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in Moscow, and in 1882, he was entrusted with the world premiere of the Piano Concerto No. 2. In 1887, he was appointed professor of harmony, instrumentation, and piano at his alma mater, the Moscow Conservatory. He trained many talented musicians, including Alexander Scriabin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Glazunov, Sergei Prokofiev, and Nikolai Medtner. As a theorist of counterpoint, he also published "Movable Strict Counterpoint" in 1909. He focused his efforts on the study of Bach and Renaissance canons rather than Russian nationalistic music. Consequently, his compositional style leaned towards German music, emphasizing counterpoint and structural integrity, rather than the unique lyricism characteristic of Russian music.
