1. Life
The German composer d'Albert, of British origin, is said to have Italian ancestors and to be related to Alberti. His father was a pupil of Kalkbrenner and had also worked as a ballet teacher at Covent Garden. Although he received some instruction from his father, d'Albert was largely self-taught in music. Upon becoming a scholarship student at the New Music School in London, his name became known to Rubinstein, Richter, Brahms, and Hanslick. Richter introduced him to Liszt.
2. D'Albert as a Pianist
As a virtuoso, he had a strong reputation for his performances of works by Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms, and others. His performances of Bach were also highly acclaimed.
3. Piano Works
Character pieces form the core of his piano works and possess the most substantial completeness among d'Albert's compositions. On the other hand, larger-scale works such as sonatas, perhaps due to their impression of being overly lengthy, are not frequently performed in modern times.
In addition to piano works, he also composed stage works and Lieder.
