Born near Salzburg, he belonged to a choir in his youth and studied under Michael Haydn. At the age of 19, he entered the priesthood, but after resigning in 1803, he moved to Vienna and studied under Joseph Haydn. He began to earn a living as a piano and guitar teacher. In 1817, he established a publishing house with a friend. As a composer, he produced numerous piano and guitar miniatures, as well as lieder and operas. His publishing house, Diabelli & Co., published works byBeethoven,Schubert,Czerny, and others.
