French composer. He made significant contributions to 19th-century French mélodie (art song). Among his works, L'invitation au Voyage, based on a poem by Baudelaire, is particularly well-known. Four of his mélodies, including this one, were arranged by Duparc himself for orchestra accompaniment.
He studied piano, composition, and music theory under César Franck. He is counted among the "Franckists," who, along with Franck, played a role in establishing modern French music. Suffering from mental illness, he withdrew from composition and moved to Switzerland after 1885.Duparc's mélodies are regarded as precursors to those of Fauré. Due to his severely self-critical nature, he himself destroyed works such as a cello sonata and orchestral pieces that had been well-received in Paris, leaving only a dozen or so mélodies that survive to this day.
