French composer. Durey, who decided to pursue music after seeing Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande in 1907, had his early works strongly reflect that influence. Subsequently, he was also influenced by Schoenberg's atonal music. He studied at the Schola Cantorum and, for a time, was associated with "Les Six" but later withdrew. In addition to serving as vice-president of the French Progressive Musicians' Association and president of the People's Music League, he wrote music criticism for L'Humanité, the official newspaper of the French Communist Party. After becoming involved with the French Communist Party, his works began to show political overtones. Besides works for orchestra, he composed chamber music, choral pieces, and songs, with Le printemps au fond de la mer (Spring at the Bottom of the Sea), based on a poem by Cocteau, being particularly renowned.
