A Czech composer who was also a pianist. He studied under Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and showed a stylistic evolution that bridged the gap between German-speaking Classical and Romantic works. From an early age, he was exposed to the piano and organ and was a member of a church choir. He gave concerts throughout Europe and, although he also moved to Germany and London at times, he primarily resided in Paris.
His works exhibit a stylistic progression that can be traced from Beethoven to Schumann and Mendelssohn. Furthermore, he commissioned the piano manufacturer Broadwood to create a piano with an extended range of half an octave, and he composed works specifically for this instrument. As a pianist, he excelled in legato playing.
