(Ives) Although he studied composition under Horatio Parker at Yale University, he did not choose music as a profession and instead joined an insurance company. After 1907, while managing his own insurance company, he pursued composition as a hobby. His reputation as a composer during his lifetime was not particularly high. His works, while rich in experimental spirit, also incorporate melodies with strong local color. His symphonies, in particular, have been accepted into the repertoire of European orchestras and are performed quite frequently. Among his piano works, there are experimental pieces that utilize microtones. Currently, he is regarded as one of the most unique figures in American music history.
