A composer born on December 5, 1870, in Kamenice, Southern Bohemia. He studied at the Faculty of Law at Charles University in Prague while also attending the Prague Conservatory. Subsequently, he joined Dvořák's master class. In later years, he became a professor of composition at the Prague Conservatory, serving as its director from 1920 to 1922. His works (including symphonic poems, operas, chamber music, lieder, and piano miniatures) show a strong inclination towards indigenous musical materials such as folk songs. He died on June 18, 1969, in Skuteč, Eastern Bohemia.
