British composer. His piano works include sonatas, preludes, etudes, and other short pieces. After studying linguistics at Oxford University, he studied under Boulanger in Paris. He also had close ties with Stravinsky and Poulenc. From the mid-1940s, he served as Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music in London and was awarded a knighthood. His compositional style is characterized by meticulous writing, reminiscent of contemporary French music.
