British composer. He was a prolific composer who widely engaged in works for orchestra, concertos for string instruments, chamber music, sonatas, and music for ballet and film. He enrolled in the Royal Academy of Music in London but later withdrew. Inspired by the Irish poet W.B. Yeats, his interest in and study of Irish culture were reflected in his later works. His compositional style was unique, based on diatonicism yet enriched with chromatic harmonies, creating a brilliant and distinctive sound. His achievements were recognized, and in later years, he attained the position of Master of the King's/Queen's Music.
