German composer. J.S. Bach’s eldest son. His mother was J.S. Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara. He gained renown as a master of improvisation and was active as an organist and keyboardist. From the age of 10, he studied organ, keyboard, and composition with J.S. Bach. Works such as the Klavierbüchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Little Preludes for Beginners, Two-Part Inventions, Three-Part Sinfonias, and The Well-Tempered Clavier were composed by J.S. Bach for the purpose of Wilhelm Friedemann's education.
In 1729, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig to study law, also showing interest in philosophy and mathematics. After graduation, he served as organist at the Sophienkirche in Dresden and the Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen (St. Mary's Church) in Halle, and as conductor of church concerts. However, due to his lack of diligence, he lost his permanent position for the last 20 years of his life, earning a living by composing, performing publicly, and teaching music while moving from place to place.
His works include nine keyboard concertos and nine keyboard sonatas, as well as symphonies, German Masses, cantatas, trio sonatas, and organ pieces.
