A German organist and composer, known as one of the most outstanding organists of his time. He received his musical education in his hometown of Nuremberg. In 1669, he became organist at the university church in Altdorf, and subsequently served as organist in various churches and courts throughout Germany and Austria. From 1695, he returned to Nuremberg and became organist at St. Sebald Church, where he died. He had connections with the Bach family, and Johann Christoph Bach (J.S. Bach's elder brother) was his pupil. Published in the 20th century, the Canon from his "Canon and Gigue for 3 Violins and Basso Continuo in D major" has become particularly well-known as "Pachelbel's Canon".
