American composer. His representative works include the overture Johnny Comes Marching (1934) and Symphony No. 3 (1937). Works that include piano in their instrumentation are the Piano Concerto and the Piano Quintet (1936). He received his musical education after serving in World War I. After studying with Arthur Farwell in California, he went to Paris to study with Boulanger. He also received a Guggenheim Fellowship. His Piano Concerto, premiered in Paris, was well-received.
After returning to the United States, he dedicated himself to teaching composition at Westminster Choir College, Princeton University, Cornell University, and the University of Colorado.
