American composer. He met John Cage in 1950 and became his disciple. He became known as an experimental composer, utilizing graphic notation and other innovative techniques. His works tended to become sparser in sound and longer in duration over the years. Particularly his late works, while extremely precise in terms of compositional technique, are often perceived as leisurely and pleasant to the ear, and have been widely accepted by audiences.
