British composer. His works featuring piano include the Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra and the Piano Concerto. After attending Pembroke College, Cambridge, he studied under Stanford, Vaughan Williams, and Holst at the Royal College of Music in London. He served in World War I and was wounded. After the war, he gained recognition for his compositions that utilized the voice like an instrument, such as his vocalises. During World War II, he served as the Director of Music for the BBC. In later years, he was appointed Master of the Queen's Music and was knighted. Bliss, who had briefly visited the United States in the 1920s, also visited Japan in 1964 with the London Symphony Orchestra.
