German composer, known for works such as Kol Nidrei. He received his initial musical training from his mother, who was a soprano singer. In 1852, he received a scholarship from the Frankfurt Mozart Foundation for his String Quartet, and subsequently studied composition and music theory with Hiller and piano with Reinecke in Cologne. Subsequently, he held various positions, including Music Director in Koblenz, Kapellmeister at the Sondershausen court, conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society, conductor of the Breslau Municipal Orchestra, and professor of the composition masterclass at the Berlin Academy of Arts. He was awarded honorary doctorates from Cambridge and Berlin Universities and was also elected an honorary member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. Bruch's compositional style is characterized by its profound epic quality.
