A German composer. He achieved significant accomplishments as a conductor, is counted among the great conductors of the 20th century, and his presence is almost deified. He was characterized by a strong and profound spirituality. He gained experience as a répétiteur in Breslau and Munich, subsequently assuming conducting positions at the Lübeck Opera, Mannheim Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Berlin State Opera, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and Berlin Philharmonic. While conducting in Vienna, he also undertook studies in musicology with Schenker. He also held guest conducting engagements and significant posts with the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Bayreuth, and the Berlin State Opera. His decision to remain and continue his activities in Germany during World War II was, in the post-war period, sometimes scrutinized as collaboration with the Nazi regime; however, he was ultimately acquitted, enabling him to resume his conducting career. Following the war, he embarked on extensive concert tours across various regions.
