A Dutch composer. He studied composition and music theory with Wagenaar at the Utrecht Conservatory. After graduation, he served as a professor of composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory and also became director of the Rotterdam Conservatory, contributing to composition education in the Netherlands. He also held important positions, such as chairman of the Dutch section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). His compositional style began under the influence of Fauré, Debussy, Brahms and Mahler, gradually developing a strong interest in polyrhythm and polytonality. His Piano Concerto showcases a unique approach utilizing established counterpoint.
