Born in Tokyo. While studying composition under Tomojiro Ikenouchi during high school, he pursued studies at the University of Tokyo, graduating from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science (1946), and the Department of Aesthetics, Faculty of Letters (1950). In 1947, he joined Shinseikai at the invitation of Minao Shibata. In 1948, he won first prize at the Music Competition of Japan for his song cycle Tansai-sho. Subsequently, he moved to France in 1951 and studied under Darius Milhaud, Olivier Messiaen, and others at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. After returning to Japan, he began teaching at Toho Gakuen School of Music from 1955. While experiencing much avant-garde music, including twelve-tone technique, he adopted a critical stance towards it, creating music that emphasized the lyricism of melody and classical constructive principles. He is particularly highly regarded in the field of song. He is a recipient of the Otaka Prize and the Mainichi Art Award.
