Italian composer. From his early works based on serial music, he continuously sought new methods, including those introducing indeterminacy and works using collage. In that respect, he became one of the leading composers of the 20th century. He had a deep relationship with the Italian semiotician Umberto Eco. The mutual influence between these two can be seen in Berio's creation of "open works" in music and Eco's compilation of this concept in his writings.
He studied under Ghedini and others at the Milan Conservatory, and with Dallapiccola at the Tanglewood Summer Seminar. He participated in the project to establish an electronic music studio at the Italian National Broadcasting Corporation (RAI) in Milan, and also served as the director of this studio. He gave lectures in various locations across Europe and America, and in the 1960s, he moved to the United States to teach music at the Juilliard School.
