Bohemian composer. In addition to symphonies, which are said to have rivaled the popularity of Mozart and Haydn during his lifetime, he composed chamber music, church cantatas, secular cantatas, and choral works. In 1750, he was appointed Kapellmeister at the court of Duke Friedrich III of Gotha. In the mid-1760s, he also studied in Italy.
Galuppi, Gluck, and Paisiello, which he encountered there, and by the Seiler theatrical troupe that visited Gotha, he created melodramas such as Ariadne auf Naxos (1775) and Pygmalion (1779), as well as Singspiele like Romeo und Julie (1776).
