Known as a representative French opera composer of the early 19th century. His father served as the Archbishop's secretary in Rouen, and he belonged to the church choir in his childhood. He began his career as a musician by composing two operas in his teens. He achieved success with operas such as "Le calife de Bagdad". Afterward, he accepted Cherubini's advice and acquired full-fledged compositional techniques, subsequently releasing his masterpiece, "La Dame blanche". He taught as a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire.
