He majored in law at the University of Königsberg and held positions as an associate judge and a high court judge as his main profession. Alongside this, he also had facets as a novelist, music critic, and composer. During his university years, he studied piano and counterpoint concurrently with law, and during his judicial apprenticeship, he studied composition under Reichardt in Berlin. When he temporarily lost his judicial position due to the effects of war, he served as music director at the Bamberg Theater and as conductor of the Seconda Opera Company. He contributed critiques, such as one on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, to the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, published in Leipzig, under the pseudonym 'Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler'. Schumann'sKreisleriana was inspired by this.
Generally, his achievements as a music writer are more highly regarded than those as a composer, and he is sometimes positioned as a pioneer of modern music criticism.
