Meyerbeer (Mayerbeer) was born to a Jewish banker in Berlin. At the age of 26, he went to Italy and was influenced by Rossini, gaining fame as an opera composer with "Il crociato in Egitto" in 1824. "Robert le Diable" and "Les Huguenots" achieved overwhelming success in Paris, where he had been based since the triumph of "Il crociato in Egitto". While it is undeniable that he profoundly influenced opera composers as the composer who established grand opera, his musical value is not highly regarded today, perhaps due to a perceived lack of intrinsic charm in his works.
