Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. In 1952, he graduated from Tokyo Music School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where he studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi. Inspired by Bartók, he dedicated himself to the study of folk music immediately after graduation. In 1953, he formed "Yagi no Kai" (The Goat Group) with Yuzo Toyama and Hikaru Hayashi. His socially conscious approach led to an interest not only in Japanese folk songs but also in jazz and African folk music, establishing a unique compositional style based on these materials. Representative works include the “Composition for Chorus” (from 1958) series and “Two Tableaux for Orchestra '65” (1965). Proficient in piano performance, he also composed many masterpieces for the piano, such as “Piano Concerto No. 2” (1970) and “Piano Sonata” (1973). He received numerous awards, including the Otaka Prize, the Grand Prize of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival, and the Salzburg TV Opera Gold Prize.
