Italian composer. Born to a father who was both a pianist and a conductor. His works for piano include piano concertos and pieces for solo piano. Due to his parents' divorce, he grew up moving frequently between Trieste, Berlin, and Vienna with his grandmother and father. Malipiero's creative origins lie in his transcription of scores by Monteverdi, Frescobaldi, and Merulo at the Biblioteca Marciana, and his study of composition with Marco Enrico Bossi in Venice. In 1913, he visited Paris and met Casella. He was awarded the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Prize for his string quartet Rispetti e Strambotti. From 1926, he also undertook the editing of Monteverdi's complete works.
