A Russian-born Italian conductor and composer. He left Russia with his parents at the age of two and spent most of his childhood in Geneva. At Cortot's recommendation, he moved to Paris in 1925 to seriously study piano and composition. He spent World War II in Italy and subsequently acquired Italian citizenship. In 1944, he became the music director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, dedicating more time to conducting and teaching than to composition. He then served as principal conductor for numerous symphony orchestras and was involved in the first recordings of contemporary composers.
