A composer from the former Soviet Union. He nurtured many composers, including Kabalevsky and Khachaturian.
Following his family's custom, he initially received military education. His interest in music grew, and after studying privately, he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory at the age of 25. He studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and Lyadov. After graduation, while continuing his compositional activities, he served as a professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory.
The core of his works consists of nearly 30 symphonies. He also composed piano sonatas and short pieces. While drawing from the tradition of Russian music, such as Tchaikovsky, he developed his unique style and advanced "Soviet Symphonism".
