French composer. He composed numerous "comic operas," achieving success with Isoline. He studied under Saint-Saëns and others at the École Niedermeyer in Paris. In 1874, he was appointed organist at Saint-Sulpice Cathedral, succeeding Fauré. Two years later, he received the gold medal from the Société des Compositeurs for his symphony. Messager also worked as a conductor. Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, which he premiered, was dedicated to Messager. He conducted at the Opéra-Comique, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London, and the Paris Opéra. From 1908 until his death, he also served as the music director of the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire in Paris.
