A composer born in Korea who later primarily worked in Germany. He studied abroad in Japan, learning cello at Osaka College of Music and composition from Tomojiro Ikenouchi in Tokyo. In the 1950s, he taught composition and music theory at Pusan National University and Seoul National University. Subsequently, he studied under Tony Aubin at the Conservatoire de Paris and also at the Berlin University of the Arts. Although he was extradited to Seoul on suspicion of espionage and sentenced to death, he returned to Berlin and continued his creative activities while teaching music at the Berlin University of the Arts. He aimed to fuse Western avant-garde techniques with traditional Korean music.
