Russian composer and conductor of the Romantic era. From 1870 to 1878, he studied composition with Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In later years, he taught theory and composition at his alma mater and the Court Capella. His students included Prokofiev, Gnessin, and Myaskovsky, among others. He was also associated with Balakirev's 'Mighty Handful' and dedicated himself to promoting Russian music worldwide. His own compositions largely consist of smaller forms rather than large-scale works. While Russian music often evokes images of grandeur and sometimes rustic earthiness, he was known as a 'musical miniaturist.' He composed lyrical and delicate piano miniatures and romances, often utilizing themes from Russian folk songs and by Glinka and Borodin, composers associated with the Russian Five. He left behind the saying, 'What is Russian in Russian music is what feels Russian when one hears it.'
