Honegger was a Swiss composer who studied at the Zurich Conservatory and the Paris Conservatoire, and was a member of Les Six, a group of French composers active in the first half of the 20th century. With Darius Milhaud, also a member of Les Six, he was a fellow student and close friend at the Paris Conservatoire.
In addition to operas, symphonies, chamber music, and songs, Honegger also excelled in the fields of radio and film music, which were new media at the time. Among his well-known works are the dramatic psalm Le Roi David (King David), the dramatic oratorio Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), the Symphonic Movement No. 1, Pacific 231, and the film Les Misérables (1934).
