Born in Osaka, he studied composition under Tomoe Nagai and his father, Hisakazu Matsushita. He displayed his compositional talent early on, composing his first symphony at the age of 13. He attended Kyushu Imperial University, Faculty of Science, and its graduate school. In 1949, he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Physics, Osaka City University. Concurrently, as a composer, he quickly adopted post-war avant-garde techniques and won numerous international competitions. From 1965 to 1980, he served as a visiting professor at a research institute at the University of Hamburg, establishing himself as a world authority in phase analysis. During this period, he explored his own compositional style while interacting with leading composers of the time, such as Boulez and Xenakis. From the late 1960s onwards, he published works that expressed his identity as a Japanese person, for example, by incorporating Buddhist texts. He also composed many electronic and tape music pieces.
