Hungarian composer, teacher, and music writer. Born in the border region between Hungary and Austria, his birth name was Michael Brand, and his native language was German. He moved to Budapest in 1842 and remained active there for the rest of his life. Around 1856, he became close with F. Liszt.
Around 1859, he began composing works in the Hungarian style, and in the same year, he changed his name to "Mosonyi" after his birthplace. In 1860, Hungary's first weekly music magazine was launched, in which Mosonyi advocated for the "Hungarian style."
His works include Hungarian-language operas, cantatas, lieder, symphonies, chamber music, and piano pieces, as well as four-hand arrangements of Beethoven's complete symphonies and Liszt's Missa Solemnis.
