An Austrian self-taught composer, he was strongly committed to the twelve-tone technique. Although Schoenberg introduced Hauer's works at the "Society for Private Musical Performances," which Schoenberg founded, their relationship became strained when Hauer claimed to be the true originator of the twelve-tone technique. From his early works, Hauer pursued the twelve-tone technique through chromatic polyphony, and indeed systematized it in 1919, preceding Schoenberg. As Nazi power grew, Hauer's works began to be labeled as "degenerate art," and he lived in seclusion. During this period, he composed over 1000 twelve-tone pieces of various genres under the title Zwölftonspiele (Twelve-Tone Games). Only after World War II did Hauer's works finally come to light and begin to be performed.
