Born in Siegendorf, Austria, in 1902. He studied composition and piano in Vienna, subsequently teaching piano and composition in various locations including Cairo, Manila, Hungary, and Cincinnati, USA.
At Cairo University, where he taught from 1927 to 1932, he developed an interest in Arab music. From 1932 to 1934, while teaching at the University of the Philippines, he conducted research on the tribal music of Luzon. His achievements as an ethnomusicologist were reflected in his own compositions, where he incorporated unique regional music into complex tonal styles.
He received numerous accolades, including the Austrian State Prize, honorary citizenship of Siegendorf, and honorary membership of the Austrian Composers' Association, establishing him as one of Austria's leading contemporary composers.
