Italian composer. He was a prolific and rapid composer of religious works such as oratorios and cantatas, as well as orchestral works, chamber music, piano pieces, and songs. Today, he is known as a composer of bel canto operas. Born into a family involved in the textile industry, he studied at a conservatory attached to a church. He later also studied at the Bologna Conservatory. Escaping the constraints of his father, who wished him to take over the family business or become a lawyer or teacher, he volunteered for the military. He continued composing during his military service. Following the success of an opera he composed during this period, he was discharged a few years later and continued composing operas.
Although Donizetti is primarily known today as an opera composer, his early creative period focused on instrumental music, including many works for keyboard instruments.
