An Italian composer. He studied piano and composition at the Milan Conservatory. Additionally, he pursued studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses.
2. Musical Style
Contrary to the prevailing trends of his time, Castiglioni approached the adoption of twelve-tone technique and the inclination towards Neoclassicism with caution, instead demonstrating insight into late Romantic orchestral works. He often employed a unique idiom that neutralized the extremes found in contemporary music.

He received the Prix Italia for his radio opera Through the Looking Glass. He was invited as composer-in-residence at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
4. Teaching History

5. Activities Other Than Composition
Initially, he was active as a pianist. He maintained his own ideas as a composer without being swept away by prevailing trends; these very ideas are also evident in his writings, such as On Taste and Freedom (Del gusto e della liberta) and Music: Symbol and Civilization (Musica: simbolo e civilta).
