Georges Bizet, a French composer known for Carmen, was highly skilled in dramatic music. He also composed orchestral works, songs, and piano pieces, all of his piano works having programmatic titles.
He was born to a father who was a vocal teacher and a mother who was a pianist. At the age of 10, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, studying piano with Antoine Marmontel, organ and fugue with François Benoist, and composition with Pierre Zimmermann and Fromental Halévy. He also received instruction from Gounod on occasion. He won the Prix de Rome and traveled to Rome, but his mother became critically ill during his studies abroad, prompting his return to Paris. After his return, he dedicated himself to composing operas. In June 1869, he married Geneviève, daughter of Halévy, but he passed away at the young age of 37.
