Russian composer. Born into a family of clergy, he attended a seminary from 1879. He developed an interest in music through singing in a choir and learning the violin, and in 1884, he entered the elementary division of the Moscow Conservatory, but withdrew due to inability to pay tuition fees.
Subsequently, he enrolled in the Moscow Philharmonic Society's music school, where he remained until 1892 on a scholarship, earning a living by playing the violin, bassoon, and timpani, and by copying scores. However, in 1893, his health deteriorated, and he continued composing while recuperating in Crimea.
His works show the influence of Tchaikovsky and Borodin, and his Symphony No. 1 (composed 1894–95, published 1900) is well-known.
