Born in Germany, he was active in France as a pianist, piano educator, and composer. He is said to have been born while his parents were traveling from Kassel to Berlin. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire, he also received instruction from Haydn in Vienna. In Vienna, he met Clementi and was recognized as both a pianist and a composer. Subsequently, he also performed in London. Upon returning to Paris, he became a director of the piano manufacturing company Pleyel and gained renown as a pianist and piano instructor. His achievements include improving piano technique, particularly the use of octaves, the left hand, and pedals. As a composer, Kalkbrenner demonstrated his dedication to the piano through his piano concertos, piano sonatas, and etudes for piano.
