French composer, harpsichordist, and organist. He is the most famous member of the Couperin family, known as "Couperin the Great." His father, Charles Couperin, and his uncle, Louis Couperin were organists at Saint-Gervais Church in Paris.
In 1679, he lost his father at the age of 10.
He subsequently worked as a church organist, and in 1693, he obtained the position of Royal Organist. Couperin frequented the court and taught harpsichord to members of the royal family. He also composed chamber music and sacred works for royal worship as a court composer. In 1713, Pièces de clavecin, Livre I (Harpsichord Pieces, Book I) was published. The Pièces de clavecin were published up to Book IV (1730), containing a total of over 230 pieces.
