German organist and composer. Born in Neukirchen, Saxony, he was already a virtuoso organist at the age of eight.
In 1838, he moved to Leipzig and met Mendelssohn and Schumann. In Winterthur, he was active as an organist, music teacher, composer, organizer of musical events, and at times, a répétiteur for Wagner's operas.
From 1862, he was active in Zurich. Thereafter, he successively changed his bases of activity to Würzburg, Leipzig, Dresden, and Hamburg. Due to his unconventional lifestyle, he became impoverished and physically incapacitated in his later years, and died in Hamburg in 1903.
