Austrian composer, music publisher, and piano manufacturer who was active in France. He is said to have studied with Vanhal in his youth. In 1772, he became a pupil of Haydn. From 1789, he served as Kapellmeister at Strasbourg Cathedral. After the French Revolution, he worked as a conductor in London from 1791 to 1792.
In 1795, he moved to Paris and established a publishing house. He published approximately 4,000 works by composers including Boccherini, Beethoven, Clementi, Cramer, J. L. Dussek, and Haydn. He also issued miniature scores of Haydn's symphonies and Pleyel's own string quartets.
In 1805, Pleyel failed to establish a branch in Vienna, and in 1813, he divested himself of his publishing business.
His compositions span a wide range of genres, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, instrumental music, and songs.
