French composer. He began his musical studies in his late teens. At the Paris Conservatoire, he studied harmony with Lavignac and Dubois, and composition with Massenet and Fauré. In 1897, he won second prize in the Prix de Rome with his cantata Frédégonde. In 1900, he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for his cantata Sémiramis. After a three-year stay in Rome, he also traveled to Germany and Austria before returning to Paris. Born in a region of France with strong German influences, Schmitt's works combine German gravitas with French refinement. In addition to his piano works, he composed for various ensembles, including orchestral pieces, concertos, chamber music, and vocal works.
