Italian composer and cellist. Born into an artistic family, he received his first musical instruction from his father. He debuted as a cellist at the age of 13.
In 1757, he and his father were summoned to Vienna, the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, where he became a musician at the court theater. He also composed during this period, but his works were not published and spread through manuscript copies.
From 1766, he embarked on concert tours, and his string quartets and string trios were published in Paris. He moved to Madrid and composed collections of quartets and symphonies concertantes, among other works. In the 1770s, he wrote numerous string quintets for the court orchestra, which were subsequently published in Paris.
From 1786, he secured an annual salary through a contract with Frederick William II of Prussia, and continued his activities while receiving support from other patrons. He died in Madrid in 1805.
His works include:
- Over 100 string quintets
- Nearly 100 string quartets
