Composer and conductor, born in Paris in 1936. He began studying piano at the age of six. After completing his studies in philosophy, he entered the Conservatoire de Paris in 1955. There, he studied composition with Milhaud, music analysis with Messiaen, and counterpoint with Pre-Cossard. A decisive influence on Ami as a musician was his encounter with Boulez in 1956. In 1965, he participated in Boulez's courses in Basel. He also participated in the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music, where in 1960 he performed his Piano Sonata (1958), one of his important early works.
He began his career as a conductor in 1962, following his appointment as assistant at the Odéon Theatre. His activities as music director of the Domaine Musical, where he succeeded Boulez from 1967, are particularly noteworthy. From 1973, he served as music advisor to the French National Radio, and from 1984, as director of the Lyon Conservatory.
