German pianist and composer.
He studied under Ludwig Berger from 1837, and later at the Royal Church Music School in Berlin with A. E. Grell, A. W. Bach, and others. In 1851, he became a piano teacher at the same school, and in 1858, he was appointed professor.
He was widely known as an excellent chamber musician, as well as a composer of salon pieces, etudes, and sonatas for piano, and chamber music. He also published works such as Wegmeister in der Pianoforte-Literatur (Guide to Piano Literature) (co-authored with J. Weiss, Berlin 1862, 2nd ed. 1877) and Führer durch die Klavier-Literatur (Handbook of Piano Literature) (Berlin 1886, 2nd ed. 1895).
