An English composer, he was also active as a pianist and had connections with Mendelssohn and Schumann.
He composed four piano concertos and pieces for solo piano. He was taught music by his grandfather and was a member of the boy choristers at King's College, Cambridge. Before turning 10, he entered the Royal Academy of Music and made his debut as a pianist in 1835, performing his own piano concerto. He was involved in the establishment of the Bach Society in 1849 and the first performance of the St. Matthew Passion in England in 1854. He served as conductor of the Philharmonic Society, with which he had been associated since his debut with a piano concerto, as Professor of Music at Cambridge University, and as Principal of the Royal Academy of Music. He was awarded a Doctor of Music degree from Cambridge University and a Doctor of Civil Law degree from Oxford University, and was knighted in his later years.
